I missed the second question. The find TDC on an engine turn the crank in the running direction(This gets all the backlash in the timing gears out) Bring the number one piston to top dead center. Then look at your valves if they are both closed then you are on TDC is one is open then you need to go 180 degrees.
If you accidentally go past TDC on the compression stroke don't just turn it back to the timing mark. Go way passed it backward and then come back to the mark. This the back lash is back out. This can make the difference of several degrees on the injection pump.
