Since you can see the gears: 1) Imagine taking a strip of paper slightly narrower than the gears and feeding it into the "center" of the gear set from the "outlet" side of the pump. 2) Imagine turning the shaft such that the paper is pulled through the center of the gear set from the "outlet" side and is pushed out the "inlet" side. 3) This is the correct direction of rotation for a gear pump. -Note I said imagine, since some pump gear sets are a very close fit and there may not be space for the paper-
In operation the oil is carried from the inlet port around the outside of the gear set, by the gear tooth cavities, to the outlet port where it is squeezed out of the gear tooth cavities by the gear set meshing in the center. The pumping action is this squeezing by the gear set meshing.
