The IH 574 transmission is miserable to shift. IH made pretty good row crop tractors but really fell on their face for a utility tractor in the late 60s and 70s.
The JD 2020 was a good utility tractor and the diesels in them where just about bullet proof. Just make sure the hydraulic system is operating OK. You can put some serious money into it there if you have to hire the work done.
As to those choosing Gas over diesel. It seems like the older gas tractors don't run the best on the newer formula gas. It seems like you are always having to adjust/play with them to run half way right. Most of the time a diesel will run more consistent.
