I sample annually and it actually makes me money. The increase in production more than outweighs the cost and inconvenience. I do full nutrient testing along with trace minerals and microbial activity. Recently I have been using algae, and trace mineral replacement. I have found Bio ready sulfur, gypsum, and potash to be the biggest help in this area. Most don't check for trace minerals but I recommend it. I grow alfalfa here and just the application of the sulfur and phosphate increased my yield from about 40 80# bales to the acre to an average of 65. That was over a 50% increase. Now that was last year. This year the tests say that I need to continue with the algae and put in the normal amount of phosphate but that I need to add about 50% of the amount of Ammonium nitrate that we normally use as now with the increased microbial activity is allowing more nitrogen nodules to develop on the plant root. Balancing the soil is not like it used to be and crop rotation is becoming more and more important.
