Job(s)..any job is a rare find around here.

I read in many other forums of some people replying to statements like mine i.e.-'Jobs are everywhere. If you can't find a job, you're just lazy', 'any job is better than no job', 'I could have 10 jobs lined up by the end of the day', etc.
Maybe these people responding live in urban areas or big cities. I live in a very rural area. It's a 45 minute drive to the grocery store, over an hour to the doctors office. There is a mom and pop gas station about 25 minutes from me for gas, bread, crackers, viennas', potted meat or pop.
Anyway, back on topic. Been working since I was 15. Two degress in science from a state university. Worked as a chemist for the petroleum industry for 20+ years. Company was bought out and downsized. Many at my company were 'downsized', we are a "At Will" state. I am in my early fifties.
Savings depleted, living off my 401k (it's just about gone). Got a temp job(guy was off for surgery) last year that lasted 2 months @$10.00/hr. That's great pay around here now. I rebuilt coffee makers for a food service company My bosses really liked my work and wanted to hire me full time but the management told them they could not hire me until they got a new client for a $10,000,000 contract. So, when the man came back from sick leave...my job ended. I am happy the mans surgery went well and he is better.
I apply for fast food jobs. Most replies are "you're 'over-qualified'". I finally get offerd one. $7.25/hr. When discussing hours to work, I am informed that my schedule is from 6:30a.m to 8:30a.m., then come back at 3:00p.m. to 6:00p.m. on Mon, Wed, and Fri. Plus, be on-call and may need to come in early or stay late to fill in. Total hours=15 hr/wk. I thought OK, I'll just get another job to fill in the gaps.
The other potential employers told me the same thing..we only need you at certain times and you must be able to work when we need you, we cannot hire you full time, you can't have another job that may interfere with this job, etc.
These jobs were about 45-55 minutes away and the hours I got were just enough to break even after my gas expense. I would need to make two trips in each day I worked because of the split shift.
Many suggest I move. It not cheap to move, plus deposits on house, utilities, etc. The bank and I own my property and my payment is a lot less than anything I could rent. I heat with wood and my only splurge is the internet to search for jobs and keep up with current events. And rant here of course ;).
Go back to college and get another degree. Yup, 50+ years old and get $55,000 in student loans just to get a job that pays $25,000 per year. I'll be paying that off 'til I die and still won't get ahead. Health care is a growing industry around here. The average salary of a nurse in my area is $25,000/yr.

The only jobs open(unless you have a cousin, close friend, on the inside) within 1-1.5 hours away are service industry and health care.

Thanks for listening.

Today's Featured Article - Listening to Your Tractor - by Curtis Von Fange. Years ago there was a TV show about a talking car. Unless you are from another planet, physically or otherwise, I don’t think our internal combustion buddies will talk and tell us their problems. But, on the other hand, there is a secret language that our mechanical companions readily do speak. It is an interesting form of communication that involves all the senses of the listener. In this series we are going to investigate and learn the basic rudimentary skills of understanding this lingo. ... [Read Article]
