Thank you for all the quick replies. Here"s the deal: IF I get this job, I have to leave my current job, start the new job and wait until the civil service test is scheduled. That could be a year plus. I can potentially work there for over a year, take the test, and either score in the top three and keep the job or be out the door. I wish I could take the test first.
My current boss is a bonehead who cannot close a gate in a barnyard, and that is the absolute truth. He cannot fire me because of my permanent civil service status, unless I really screw up. I have a mortgage, a hay and brush hogging business and a few heifers. I have a lot to lose.
I know the potential boss, and he said the test is pretty easy. I have taken a similar test in the past , pretty easy, but scored #6 and was laid off. It all depends on how many folks are taking the test and if the current employee is reachible on the list. Also for me, taking the test to keep a current job is extremely stressful, and I know that I do not take tests well under so much pressure.
I guess I answered my own question, and I am exploring the pluses and minuses. I just need to get out from under that bonehead, especially after he screwed us out of a retirement plan that was affordable to the agency and the employees. He could care less since he will be living off of his wife"s fat federal retirement.
