Maybe it's like washing your hands after using the toilet, some people will always refuse wash.
I grew up on a hog and cattle farm and was so used to the smells that I never noticed it until I got away from it. Now I notice it on people's clothes right away.
Growing up I had a classmate who could always tell if his dad had recently been in the local store, the smell of his cigars and pig crap lingered for over an hour. When confinement hog operations first appeared some had a really strong smell. One family had the smell get into their house and into their dress clothes. People complained that you could smell them in church.
Back in the 1960's hog cholera and 1970's hog psuedorabies (spelling) hit the area hard. Farmers became more carefull about changing shoes and work clothes before visiting or going to town for fear of bring the diseases home to their own livestock or spreading the disease from their own farm to a neighbr's farm. Now it's just a normal part of disease control.
