I'm getting what might be called disability from Social Security-- radiation treatment for cancer leaves one very weak, hard to stand, move and lift things. The 40 years of Social Security payment history for retirement has the disability clause in it like a insurance policy- I figure I paid in and now get a pay out as contracted, would have gotten same retirement benefits 5/6 years later anyway on birthday. recovered some but jobs not available in a 9% unemployment area for over 50 (well over 50) worker with a medical history when 25 year old college grads are available. Past couple months did some 1/2 time work for small paycheck from non-profit for light work and driving- I'm taxed on that and some on SS. Older brother got disability couple years earlier after stroke- he would like to work some also as 30 years truck driving and farming before that and army got him in habit of working-- but he had trouble standing unassisted for couple years after medical incident that statisticly over 1/2 don't survive. He told me to apply for disability, don't think of it as charity or cheating government since we worked and had payments taken from paychecks by law for the disability section as also written into Social Security program. Stats say we won't be around as long as health nuts- but we'll be around awhile to aggravate politicians, good enough reason not to take a dirt nap.

Today's Featured Article - Third Brush Generators - by Chris Pratt. While I love straightening sheet metal, cleaning, and painting old tractors, I use every excuse to avoid working on the on the electrics. I find the whole process sheer mystery. I have picked up and attempted to read every auto and farm electrics book with no improvement in the situation. They all seem to start with a chapter entitled "Theory of Electricity". After a few paragraphs I usually close the book and go back to banging out dents. A good friend and I were recently discussing our tractor electrical systems when he stated "I figure it all comes back to applying Ohms Law". At this point ... [Read Article]
