I don't know about having any random yahoo on a plane armed. I'm all for gun rights and all, but we're talking about a confined space with women, children, innocents, and equipment vital to keep everyone from crashing/dying in every direction. I know the air marshalls carry special ammunition that is supposed to break up if it hits anything and not damage the aircraft... that's fine for them but I don't think you're gonna be able to check every dude getting onboard to make sure he's not packing FMJ rounds...
Even in the wild west, there were places that made you check your gun at the door. It's not a totally new concept. Besides, in a few cases where someone did get on a plane with a bomb(shoe bomber for one) unarmed people saw it and took care of him with their own hands.
The TSA is more for show than it is for safety. The politicians had to make sure something was in place in case there was another attack- the public would blame them. What the public won't seem to understand is that the government is not all powerful. With terrorism there is almost nothing that can be done to absolutely guarantee they can't get us. There never will be either.
Things can happen in an instant. You could be in a car crash and be killed just about any day, have a heart attack, etc. These things happen every day all around us.
So, when you drive someplace do you put on a flame retardent suit, helmet, and use a 5-point harness & roll cage in your car? You'd be safer, race car drivers use 'em. A car accident is a whole heck of a lot more likely to get you than any terrorist. But I'm betting nobody here goes to such safety extremes. I sure don't.
I don't understand why we are so paranoid about terrorists. Is it something psychological? Statistically worrying about it as much as we do doesn't really make any sense to me.
