Since I was old enough to understand it, I've heard end of the world scenarios almost every year. If you do research, they go back for centuries.
There's always some yahoo/group of yahoos saying it's the end times.
It certainly could happen, but so far so good. And I have a standing offer out there- so far no takers. I'm willing to bet every penny and every possession I own that the world isn't going to end. Pick any date you want.
It's wise for everyone to have stuff around to hold out for a week or two in case the utilities fail/roads are cut off. Disasters happen.
Thing is if anything THAT BAD happens, all bets are off. Everyone will probably know you're that nut with a huge stock of food... good luck keeping the entire town of hungry people away. Or maybe we'll just get torrential rain and your underground hidey-hole gets flooded.
Point is, whatever you're expecting it's probably going to be something else. You can survive on your own for a while but if you want any kind of decent life like you had before it's going to take a community of people cooperating to keep it going.
