Of course there can be lots of legitimate speculation about who would do what, and to whom, when some crisis situation should arrive. I'm no Rambo, but I can tell you what I was prepared to do. About 25 years ago wife, small daughter and I returned to house after being gone only about 30 to-45 minutes. Entered through the kitchen and could see open window, curtains fluttering in my little girl's room. I sent them back outside and went through child's room into my bedroom, where I saw things in disarray, but no perp. I found my .41 mag in its place; was afraid he'd found it first. I didn't know if he was still in the house or not. I searched the house--closets, shower, under beds, etc. I knew beyond a doubt that if I found him I was going to shoot him, but he was gone---with wife's jewelry.
Another time I actually caught a guy in my back yard, stealing my tools. I had no intention of shooting him; just me and him, got him under control pretty quick. Wife came out, big-eyed, holding that .41 with both shaking hands. Perp and I both thought we were going to get shot. We gave him to the cops unharmed.
