Probably the best way to figgure out if it is positive or negative ground is to see how the battery is connected. If not that check to see how the coil is connected (positive, negative terminals... A generator can be either, depending on how it is flashed, when installed (reinstalled). A six volt generator can be forced to produce 12volts, weakly by replacing regulator with a 12volt regulator, or by twiddling the controls on the 6 volt unit, to the top of it"s range - (may not be true 12 volts) If unit is running, you could probably put a volt meter on the battery... I would assume there"s no battery, if you"re asking these questions.
