I've worked with 4' and 8'. sanders. The 4' use 4/150 hp motors for the sanding belts with 4 heads. 2 on top and 2 on the bottom. It also has contact drums to feed the board. The 8' sander is pretty same with 6/ 200 hp motors and 6 contact drums.(sanding 8' x 24' boards) It takes 50 HP to pull the board through that one. Sanding one side will take less hp but with any sander the board needs to be held firm to get an even sand. I have no idea what it would be like to hand feed a board. Possible kickback? And perhaps not.
