In a car no, in a larger truck yes. It is all about the true savings. If you are only getting a few gallons than the saving will not pay for the added distance. If I was filling a thirty gallon tank then maybe.
Example: My semi gets 6 MPG. So the trip would burn about 1 1/2 gallon of fuel. At $4.00 per gallon it will cost me $6.00 for the extra distance. So I would have to buy sixty gallons at 10 cents cheaper to break even.
I do this calculation on a daily basis while driving the semi. Many times you are better off to just buy the higher but closer fuel.
