Higher horsepower because we are mowing faster, that and people pay for horsepower, the manufacturer can take a cheap mower like an MTD, put a larger engine on it, it costs them $100 more but they get $200 more when they sell it because it's higher horsepower. Folks like to brag how big their tractors are, whether it's a new cub cadet or a 4020 John Deere, I hate to think how many dealers turned up the fuel on a 4020 and dyno'd it to make the customer think their tractor was stronger than the normal 4020. I think you'll also find that the newer machines don't have the duty cycle that the old ones did. If you take an old John Deere, Cub Cadet or Case and worked it wide open they'd run all day and for a good long time. I don't think you can do that with the newer machines, they'll overheat or break. I'm not real familiar with the horsepower lawsuit, from what I hear someone bought something that said "X horsepower" on the front they tested it and found out it wasn't so so now all the manufacturers obfuscate the power of their engines or equipment under the theory they can't be sued for a claim they didn't make.
