Did the JOP thing here - fortunately for me, my wife was equally opposed to a big wedding.
It was just us and our immediate family, got married in a pretty spot in the back yard of my parents house on a nice fall day.
We asked for no wedding gifts, and kept things about as simple as they could possibly be.
We're just as married as anybody else, and have NO regrets about doing it the way we did.
It wasn't just about saving money.
We've been to too many weddings, and quite honestly I hope I never have to attend another as long as I live.
It all gets so redundant.
You want to be happy and try to enjoy the day for the couple's sake, but it's just the same routine over and over.
I always feel bad for couples and their parents spending tens of thousands of dollars and hours and hours of effort - just for an event that most of the guests go to just out of obligation and would rather be spending a weekend day getting something done at home!
I don't know - maybe I'm just turning into a grumpy old man. But I agree 1000% take what you'd spend on a big reception and stick it in the bank.
I feel like the whole wedding thing has just been so commercialized and turned into a big business, and it's just another trap set in life's path to get money out of your pocket.
