Back in the early 90's when I was aboard the USS Aerica we had a guy on the flight deck get his foot run over by an F-14. Don't know how much the plane weighted but it sure made the requirements as to why everyone wear steel toed boots clear to everyone onboard.
Personally I wear steel toed boots every day, but never manage to drop anything on the toe, everything lands on the top of my foot just past where the steel cap ends......Almost makes metatarsal guards sound like a comfortable thing tpo wear. But I did that for about a year when I was working maintenance at a galvanizing plant and never dropped anything on the top of my foot but dealt with my feet hurting from the guard itself every day...
