First off there was not a recall on the JD 2640 tractors. Where there fix-as-fail warranty issues??/ Yes. This tractor is almost thirty years old so any JD warranty is long gone.
Now for your problem. How can you spend $8000 and still not know what is wrong with the tractor??? The original issue could have been something very simple or very bad. Even then it would not have cost $8000 to have it repaired.
Your biggest issue is a crooked dealer/repair shop/person.
I can get a re-manufactured hydraulic pump for under $1500. If I had to split the tractor and replace the charge pump it would not have been more than $2000 more. I could have rebuilt and repair every hydraulic thing on that tractor for less than $8000.
You have been taken advantage of. Get us some details of what repair work has been done to the tractor. Then we can make better suggestions as to what your next step should be.
