Hydraulic oil does not have the EP antiwear additives that transnmission gears need. So yes it will "hurt" the trans since it won't protect it properly. Combo trans/hydraulic oil has the EP additives and also wet-clutch and brake additives.
I went to buy some this morning at my local NAPA as nearly had a stroke!. They want $66 per 5 gallon pail for combo oil and $56 for plain hydraulic oil.
I'm heading over to the "big city" where Tractor Supply is. $36.99 per 5 gallon pail for the combo trans/hydraulic oil. Right now - that is a real bargain.
