The way you are talking about doing it will work but it will be real heavy. Just have some 10 gauge sheet steel bent to make the chute. I have had several made over the years and the last one did not cost more than fifty dollars.
The first one should be just wide enough to go on the out side of the bale chamber. Then the next just wide enough to fit over the first at the rear. I usually made them 3 feet long. The edge was usually about 2 1/2 inches tall on each side. Just drill the holes in the side rails and use bolts with double nuts for the hinges.
