I must do things differently, my wires are probably a bit higher than 2 feet but not much, and my pastures never have grass 2 feet high, the cattle see to that. :)
Every place is different, gotta do what works for you.
Some herbicides like roundup only kill the green plants it touches, new seeds can sprout the following day and come back. Great product to knock down what is already there. Not good for long term.
Some stay in the soil longer, and both kill green stuff and keep the soil a bit sterilized for a longer time. Some will be effective a over a year, but like I said, those are getting tougher for the average person to come by - if they are put on sandy soils or areas that wash into other fields/waterways, it can show up in the environment.
Stuff like Milestone and Tordon and Crossbow are good at taking out the brush and trees and broadleaves, but won't get your grasses. Perhaps a shot of roundup will kill off the grass to stay away a year or more, and one of these will give you longer term brush/broadleaf control?
Paraquat (Gramaxone, etc) is another to look into.
The salt pellets as someone suggested might be very long lasting and about as cheap as you can get, as well as being pretty good for the environment. Would last longer if you are in a dry area, need to be replaced if you get lots of rain.
