One of the smaller store bought 10-15 gallon, 1GPM pump, with 3 or 4 nozzles would do ok behind a lawn tractor. Problem with anything bigger is not the battery so much as the inability of the tractors charging system. 1 GPM is less than 5 amps. 2GPM is 8 amp and 3 GPM is 11 amps. Most lawn tractors are 3-5 amp charge.
A store bought package will have all the figuring done for it. If you want to do you own you need to select number of nozzles needed for the boom (they need to over lap). Figure height above ground, and desired spray angel, GPM and such. Do the math to determin the size of pump. Off the top of my head I say you could throw toegther a 5' booom with 4 nozzles (15" apart), 1GPM pump and 30g plastic barrel and it'd work just fine.
