The reason a simple calculator is so cheap is that the design cost was payed for thirty years ago. My Dad bought a simple calculator in the early 1970s. He gave $200-300 for it. Now you can by one for less than a Dollar.
Reasons his ignition module is so high: 1) Captive supply chain. 2) It is a complicated electronic piece of hardware. I bet it would be a lot cheaper if it did not have to a dozen safety circuits made into it. 3) Low production numbers. I bet that a few thousand a year would catch all of them made.
