Funny just a few months ago I wired at controller up for my neighbor with a 2011 dodge 2500, he had the controller but was to cheap to buy the plug-n-play harness for it. The controller has 4 wires; ground, brake input signal, constant unswitched 12V +, and brake power wire. Oddly enough all of those are present even on the newest of vehicles. Most have a tap on the brake light switch that goes 12V+ when the pedal is pushed so there's your signal wire, 12V + comes directly from the battery with an auto reset breaker inline, ground to ground, and the brake signal wire goes to the back bumper.
CAN-BUS electrical has been used on vehicles since the mid 90's and I'll bet hundreds of thousands of brake controllers have been wire on vehicle since then just as I describe with no issues.
