Early this morning, I started a thread seeking advice on a small chain saw to be used for trimming, to replace a cantankerous 14" Homelite. I have two larger saws, a 16" Stihl MS250 and a 20" Poulan.
From comments from ya'll, and research on my part, it kinda boiled down to a tossup between an Echo CS310 and a Stihl MS170. My research also revealed that our local John Deere dealer, long into small engines along with large farm machinery, had become a Stihl dealer and was seriously getting into the chain saw business. I walked into the showroom and was confronted by an entire wall of Stihl chain saws on display. Everything from the MS170 to thousand dollar pro models.
I checked out an MS170 and liked it. Considering the John Deere dealership with Stihl parts and service is 3 miles from my house, and a full service Echo dealer is 25 miles, it actually became kind of a no-brainer. I went with a Stihl MS170.
I used it briefly this evening and wasn't disappointed. Thanks for all the input. If it hadn't been for some of the comments from ya'll, I might have overlooked the Stihl.

In this series we are going to investigate and learn the basic rudimentary skills of understanding this lingo.
