This is just another of the areas where info. on paper, at least in my mind, is better than digging through the internet. But, you can find tire data, if you have the patience. Static loaded radius is a key figure, as is recommended rim width. 15.5x38 is such a low profile tire, it often stands shorter than a 14.9x38. Brands and type make a difference too. I doubt you would be happy trying to match a 16.9x38 to any of the smaller ones. I am not a fan of mis-matching tires and rims, but it's done all the time. Perhaps some of the tractor pullers would be most knowledgable about these 38" tire combinations/sizes.
