Boulders are one thing, but if you create too slow of a pool in front of that wall, it lets the water warm up much more than it would if it were just flowing through.
Warm water holds less oxygen, no matter how much bubbling it does.
Thats why we have so many fantastic trout rivers in Mass that hold no trout. All the old mills dammed them up. Plenty of churning water flowing over the tops of the dams oxygenating the water, but the pools warm it up so much that it does no good.
