We had a Lt Commander on my first ship that was out Engineering Officer. He had a college degree, but it was in geology. What that actually had to do with engineering we never figured out......but what we alldid know was that the man was dumb as the rocks he studied.....
Wasn't there to actually see it happen, but was aboard to experience the results. The idiot ordered the MMOW to shut down the turbine generator that was online. The MMOW ((((an E6, First Class Machinist Mate)))))) told him it was the only generator in operation and promptly got a chewing out/cussing and a lesson in how the Engineering Officer was more important than he was and his orders were final. The MMOW's response was basically 'Yes Sir", and he pulled the shutdown on the generator. The ship immdiately went dark and you could hear the air starters spinning over the BIG emergency diesels and them rummbling to life. Story told was that the Engineers only comment to the whole situation was "OOOOOPS"............No apology to the MMOW for trying to watch out for him, nothing.
