That is absolutely doable! In some cases you can do it without even removing the valve assembly.If it has retainer plates screwed to the valve body, 90% of the time it's a O-ring/back-up ring arrangement. No removable end plates, there may be a lip seal in there, and if so, you will have to remove the centering spring to re-assemble it, as you can only push the spool through the valve body in one direction.If the chrome is pitted, clean it up as best you can with a stiff wire wheel. Be careful not to buff the sharp edges of the spool, this sharpness helps to seal the valve. Do not insert a spool into any hole except the one it came out of.
