There are a lot of good companies that aren't union. Some in fact are much better than union shops. There is a lot of politics and corruption in unions and comparing the unions of decades ago to the unions of today is like comparing apples to basketballs. Isn't the union a big part of why GM and Chrysler needed the bailouts? People that have been in a union for years would never say anything bad about about them but there are a lot of people that have never been in a union that figure they are much better off. I've worked in both and for me, the way the employer treated the employees was more important than if it was a union shop or not.
Every union shop has at least a couple guys that have been there forever that should have been let go years ago because they were useless. The union protects these lazy workers and often the company is scared of the union when it comes to letting workers go that deserve it. A friend of mine quit the union because they didn't practice what they preach. Some guys would have steady work year round while other guys would go to the bottom of the list when the job they were on was finished. That's the way it's supposed to work, according to the union, to make it fair for everybody but there were at least a dozen guys that just jumped from one project to the next without having to go back on the list. Some guys would have to wait for 3 months or more to get another job but if they went to work for a non union shop, so they could pay their bills, the union would fine them and threaten to kick them out of the union. It was more of a who you were or who you you knew rather than who was the better worker or following union policy.
