Thing is, it takes $$ to build and maintain roads, they don't fix themselves.
For the last week we have put a lot of miles on our car, it's a Toyota Prius hybrid which runs on gasoline, in warm weather like this, it averages right at 55 mpg. Thats a 3300 pound car that runs well over 500 miles on 10 gallons of gas. Not enough tax $$ in that 10 gallons to pay our fair share of road repair. The latest I hear is that most states and the fed are looking at taxing cars / trucks on miles driven in addition to fuel tax. What is proposed is to set the tax rate by the weight of the Car / truck. That may be the most fair method, as weight and road damage pretty well go together.
