Jim: Donnie covered it pretty well, but I would add one or two cautions: It depends upon the tractor...the three speed in my 1938 F-14 is dead simple, and with the right tools, some patience and a good manual, you can overhaul the whole thing with little or no prior experience. On a John Deere 3020 with Power Shift, for example, it's another whole ballgame. Finally, Donnie gives good advice...replace leaking seals, flush it out, and if it ain't broke, don't fix it!
