Well today my 40 something year old tedder broke. It is a kuhn GF 440 T, probably the only one still in use. The input shaft bearing failed. I tore into it this evening and found that the gearbox, that I had kind of wondered about, since there was no fill or drain, had about two pounds of stiff grease in it that had never moved since installation. Thus it can not be corn head grease. The two gears were getting lubed but the input bearing was on its own, although it may have been sealed. So what I am wondering about is the sticker, tucked in an out of the way spot has some french words on it, then "Shell Spirex 90 EP" which tells me that it should have 90 weight oil in it.
My inclination is to fill it with 90 wt. Anybody know what to put in it.
