Kornfused, Not to Rain on your Idea, But 5gal of water is but a Drop in the Ocean in the grand Scheme of things. AT Least If You were here in Central Texas. "The Rule of Thumb Here" is in early Spring and weather is still cool and rain is regular** 1 big watering/week,,,,a Stream about as big, or slightly less than a #2 pencil for 12 hrs In dead of "Summer every other Day" for 12 to 24 Hrs what ever it takes to keep the root ball wet, on the verge of being muddy when you shove a Hoe handle down the edge of the hole there should be some mud on the handle! With new trees What you have Basically is a Really Big Potted Plant!!! so water is critical at all times. You will do this for the first 2 yrs. Of course In winter the water is not such a critical item, just go back to the once/ week or So, depending on weather and soil condition dictate! So All I am trying to say is Loose the 5 gal bucket, drag out the hose and run a #2 size pencil stream of water for about 24 hrs. or Get a soaker hose, hook it up and coil it around the base and let it run for 24 hrs or so, If you would rather not have the water in one spot.
