: Has anybody ever converted a tractor, or any other farm machinery, to run on something other than gas or diesel? What were the results and what can you say about the experience? : Thanks : Jim Did some conversions of Chevy Vans with 250 CID 6 cyls to propane years ago. Generally got worse performance and lower fuel mileage (mpg) with the propane. The flip side was that once a gas engine was converted, it ran a really long time (200,000 miles) before needing a overhaul because the propane burned so clean. Rebuilt one that finally started burning oil. On propane it never did seat the rings in properly. I attribute that to a low combustion temperature. Moral of the story is, everything is a trade off. Propane runs cool, and makes a motor last a long time. But, it is more expensive, is less effecient, and at rebuild time causes problems. All in all, it is a wash. Probably would have been better off just staying with gasoline for power.
