We put a motion sensor light on our hen coop that shines towards the woods. Our harden is also behind the coop. Has worked wonders for keeping things out of the garden so far and haven't had any issues with the coop either. Hens go inside at dusk and we shut the door. Their pen is fenced on the sides as well as the top with the fence buried 18 inches deep. Our neighbors estranged wife just moved back in with her two beagle mixes that like chickens so we may be putting up an electric wire soon as well. Their current method of trying to get in is running and jumping into the fencing. I think a few jolts would stop them.
