With just a few cows (3-5) artificial insemination is OK( I did it for years) provided you are good at heat detection and have the time to watch them. Any more and you"ll be better off try synchronization and breeding them all at once. Sychronization is costly and I have been very diappointed at the results I have had using it. Of course that was almost 20 years ago and maybe it"s vastly improved, but I don"t know. We select a bull for calving ease, growth, heifer fertility, disposition, and structural soundness. With a yearling bull, you can only select based on EPD"s so there"s a bit of a crap shoot but it"s better then by just looking at the critter.
Synchronizing a large number of cows only makes sense to me if you are going to use AI. As you point out, with bull ratio of 1:25, he won"t be able to cover all the cows if they come in at once, so you"ll have to utilize multiple bulls which runs your breeding costs up higher than using AI. For 25 cowsI pay close attention to your bull selection, keep your cows well fed, especially in the last trimester of pregnancy (feed is the cheapest medicine) so they cycle quickly after they calve and you can keep your calving period short. That"s what we strive for. This year 94% of our calves were born in a 6 week interval and they were all breds natural service.
