: It helps a great deal. I've heard so many cautions about the gear box, but I figure it was built by humans (a category I humbley consider myself a member of), so I figure I can mess with one, with a little preparation. Was there anything you found particularly difficult, or would caution on, as far as going into the gear box? Nothing any more elaborate than the inside of an engine ... only smaller pieces. The John Deere transmission that I built was pretty straight forward ... shafts with stationary gears ... and shafts with sliding gears, After inspecting and replacing gears with damaged teeth and inspecting/replacing bearings and seals the only other part is setting proper backlash. This is accomplished using shims behind (or in front) of bearing retainers. You'll need a manual (or at least an illustrated parts breakdown) and manufacturers specifications for clearances, end play, and backlashes. Clean all parts good and try to keep the reassembly clean as well. If you have problems ... you've already found the greatest source of info available ... "Tractor Talk". Good Luck!
