I used to use pool covers for years. The easiest way is to not use any cover at all. I have done this for 4 years now and it is a lot easier in the fall and the spring. No hassles at all. Just make sure you keep chlorine in the pool and sweep it out come spring. Best investment for a pool is the best filter you can afford, and at least one size bigger than you need. I have had a pool for over 15 years, so I have had a little experience. Save your money and don't use a cover.
