Well it is 59 years old. I am going to be 62 this summer an I grind and whine when I hit road gear too. LMAO Where you talking about the tractor??? Senior moment!!! LOL
Seriously, the others have covered it pretty well. Drain the gear case and stick a magnet up inside an try to run it along the bottom of the case. See if you find any "big" pieces. IF you feel like you can get the shift cover on and off then do that. Then you can get a real good look at the insides. Plus you can rinse the case out with some diesel fuel or K-1. There always is a layer of old gunk in the bottom of them.
Then put a good quality gear oil back into the case. If you did not find anything that looked real bad then it could just be the way it is going to be. Plus the old gear oil in many of these old tractors becomes contaminated with water over time. Then it gets mixed in when you run the tractor. This makes the oil have much less lubrication ability. Good clean "new" gear oil may make it quite down.
