My experiences in Germany and with Germans, Austrians and Swiss are that they are a more monolithic and orderly culture. They don't tolerate people doing wrong because of some B.S. reason that places the blame for their misdeeds on someone else.
Used cars- well we don't make cheap and reliable simple cars any more, they were popular in developing economies. Many developing economies have increased demand for motor vehicles that can most economically be met with used vehicles. I could get on a sop box and cry conspiracy that the car dealers are exporting cars to keep the price up but I don't think that's the case. They can get more money for old iron abroad. Some of it might be the lesson Japan taught the world, their tax and motor vehicle laws encourage citizens to not drive vehicles more than 3 years old. But in a backside approach rather than making vehicles that only lasted 3 years they learned how to make excellent cars and developed programs to export them away from Japan. This keeps demand up for their auto industry and allows them to profitably serve emerging markets with high quality used vehicles.
