If it cools down a little as the sun sets, my wife and I will drive a few miles to Red Hill, the home of Patrick Henry. The annual celebration there is great. He's buried there, the old building have been kept up. Very nice place to visit and see some history. It's about 13 miles to the east of me.
Poplar Forest is about 35 miles to my north. It belonged to Thomas Jefferson. Thought about going there but still about 20,000 without power in that area.
I'm blessed to have grown up in this area with it's history. Staunton Hill artillery training was done about a mile from Red Hill.Had 14 members with the same last name as mine that were there in the war between the states for training. Then there's Appomattox. So we learned about war early here and lessons were passed down over the years. It's nice to study all this but even better to see and touch some of it.
Freedom is so great but comes with a high cost at times.
