Since I moved into my own place I've always owned dogs. Dad and Mom, on the other had have had both dogs, and cats, both together and seperately. The first cat and dog they had both got along just great. In fact it wasn't unusual for the cat to lay in the dog and go to sleep in front of the fireplace.
Some years later I had a dog and dad had maybe 8 or 10 cats that hung out around the shop. The dog got along with the majority of the cats but there were a fes that he liked to chase. The rest of them knew what they were doing and established with him really quick that they might be smaller than he was, but that they were the boss. He seemed to understand that situation quite well. In fact he once ran off and I got a call from the couple who's yard he wound up in. When I went to pick him up they said that initlally they were afraid he'd hurt their cats but that he actually played with them like no other dog they had ever seen......and was welcome back any time he decided to run off.
Until I had to start keeping my current dog on a run...due to running off....he never got schooled by the shop cats. He'd chase the and they'd run, and that was about the extent of it. Wether none of them ever stood up to him and showed him who was the boss, or wether he was just to dumb or stuborn to accept second fiddle in the dog and cat wars I don't know. Either way I know he'll still chase a cat any chance he gets.
