12v conversion problems

Last fall a local mechanic converted the electrical system on my Ferguson TO-30 to 12v. This consisted of installing a one-wire alternator and a ballast resistor. Everthing was fine all winter but as I used the tractor for longer periods of time in warmer weather I noticed the engine running rougher. Finally the thing just started to lose power and I managed to get it parked running on two or three cylinders. I checked the spark plugs and found the #1 cylinder had not been firing in the end. I changed points, distributor cap, condensor, rotor, spark plug wires and spark plugs. After I completed all this...NO SPARK! I got hold of a voltmeter and found the voltage at the coil to be 6v. I though this was OK but after researching the archives of this forum I guess that's too much voltage for the 6v coil. There is no spark from the coil. Here is a list a questions that I need help with: 1. Could it be that the excessive voltage coupled with increased operating temperatures caused the coil to fail? 2. If I replace the coil should it be with a 12v coil? What make and model? 3. If I use a 12v coil can I delete all the ballast resistors? 4. Will I need a different condensor and points if I use a 12v. coil? Sorry for the long post but I thought I'd give as much info as possible to help resolve this problem. Thanks!
