I hate to say it, but I've given in to the government takeover.
Here in massacusetts, you used to get a firearm id card that'll let you buy long guns.
Then you get the handgun permit for handguns - with "target and hunting on it" or "any legal purpose" only if the police chief likes you.
I got those - and they both WERE good for life.
But then state decided there's no money in giving permits that are good for life.
Now mine are invalid. (fortunately I KNOW this - had I carried my handgun unaware, there is a mandatory 1 year prison sentence for carrying unlicensed)
In order to get a new license - which I believe (but not sure) is only good for 5 years - I think the cost is around $200
Sadly - I just have a hard time justifying spending that much money on a license just to have it. I don't NEED it...
So I do what every good citizen should do, I give up.
Even WITH the license - the laws are so vague and open to interpretation that you feel like a criminal every time you leave the house wtih it.
Can I drive with a rifle in the car? does the ammo HAVE to be separated and in the trunk, or is that just a recommendation. If you have a hand gun and are wearing a coat that covers it - how concealed is concealed? I live at the corner of three states - what if I accidentally go on a road that enters one of the other states?
The list of questions just goes on and on. One COULD study the laws and eventually answer them, but believe it or not, these are all questions I've asked police officers at one time or another, and they themselves did not know the answers.
There is so much opportunity to be "in the wrong" that to ME it's just not worth it.
I used to love going out target shooting and shooting clay pigeons with my brothers. But with all of our invalid good-for-life licenses - it's something we just don't do anymore.

Today's Featured Article - Hydraulics - Cylinder Anatomy - by Curtis von Fange. Let’s make one more addition to our series on hydraulics. I’ve noticed a few questions in the comment section that could pertain to hydraulic cylinders so I thought we could take a short look at this real workhorse of the circuit. Cylinders are the reason for the hydraulic circuit. They take the fluid power delivered from the pump and magically change it into mechanical power. There are many types of cylinders that one might run across on a farm scenario. Each one could take a chapter in
