This is what I have found out over the years. 3pt wheel rakes work the best on flat ground, Uneven and rolling fields tend to leave hay unraked. Wheel rakes do a good job with courser hay, In grass type hay they tend to leave alot behind. I have been using an old JD 896 4 bar rake for 10 years now and it dont matter what kind on hay it is it will rake it and make a good windrow. I gave $210 for it and took it to the field that day and in 10 years I may have spent $100 in repairs to it. Anyone can rake with a 3pt pto or pull type bar rake and do a good job, But 3pt or pull type wheel rakes are more tricky to use. 3pt wheel rakes are hard to turn corners with but 3pt pto rakes are easer to corner with and pull type bar rake make the best corners. For what you have described I would look for a 4 or 5 bar pull type rake to use, There are alot of them out there that can be bought cheep enough. Bandit

After some research of convert or not, I decided to go ahead, the main reason being that this tractor was a working tractor, not a show tractor (yet). I did keep everything I replaced for the day I do want to restore her to showroom condition.
