I had 209,000 on it. A lot of the last 50,000 miles were dragging tractors with it.
It developed a light knock at high revs and then "migrated" to doing it just going down the road. I stopped the minute it did that and brought it home on a trailer.
Took the belt off (in case it was a "chirpy" bearing) and started it and it had a definite light knock - sounds like on one cylinder.
The oil pressure never has fluctuated & it didn't have any metal in the oil, plus it idles smooth as silk, so I suspected maybe a timing chain was shelling out.
Pulled the timing cover off - and the chains are fine.
Took the "easy" valve cover off and everything looks fine, so I really think it must be a sloppy wrist pin letting a piston hit a valve.
Anyway, to get the other valve cover off, it would be just as easy to pull the whole engine from where I'm at with it now, so if I'm going to do that, I think I'll just put a rebuilt engine in it.
I've been burned too many times by the local "mechanics" back when I was farming to try to get it repaired, especially with that many miles, so I think this would be the best route.
I've heard a lot of good comments on Jasper, but their website seems to want to push you only to an "authorized installer".
I called one of the closest ones to me (130 miles away) and the mechanic there told me he'd about gone away from Jasper to just using Ford remans...
I don't use it as a daily driver, so I'm sort of just looking around at different options...

Today's Featured Article - 12-Volt Conversions for 4-Cylinder Ford 2000 & 4000 Tractors - by Tommy Duvall. After two summers of having to park my old 1964 model 4000 gas 4 cyl. on a hill just in case the 6 volt system, for whatever reason, would not crank her, I decided to try the 12 volt conversion. After some research of convert or not, I decided to go ahead, the main reason being that this tractor was a working tractor, not a show tractor (yet). I did keep everything I replaced for the day I do want to restore her to showroom condition.
