In 1979 I took off work 60 calendar days to build the house in which I currently live. I picked August as it is ALWAYS the driest month, and yes the hottest too.
I got it roughed in and before I could seal it, I got it rained on 3 times.....was not a happy camper.
One of my problems was that I had installed insulation bats between the floor joists. Well, you guessed it, the rain ran down and into the vapor barrier so I had a floor full of drooping bats full of water.
I had to crawl under the house on my back and take my knife and slit every one of the bats. Was not a happy camper.
Finished the house in 45 working days, including 3 days I recovered from throwing my back out putting on the roofing shingles; wife, 3 small kids, and 1 guy came over to help swing the 36' roof trusses. That is the only outside help we had. House was 36x40 pier and beam, frame. Good part was I did it for around $10k. Have since enlarged it but that is not part of the story.
When finished, only had 2 malfunctions: A bad light switch at the front door and a barely leaking interconnect between one of the brass shower assemblies and the PVC plumbing, both of which I fixed.
Last year was a disaster for us and the weather know-nots predicted the same for this year. Yea verily they missed it again, still keeping their jobs, and we did it without a hurricane. I am absolutely thrilled.
