Northstars are known for head gasket issues and oil consumption. I bought mine needing head gaskets and it does use some oil, but I love the car. I bought it intending to fix and sell, but 3 yrs later I still have it and the day I sell it there will already be another one in the driveway.
The northstar is one of the smoothest engines I've ever driven, and at 300 hp it will get up and go and still averages over 20 mpg.
If the Allante you look at has had the head gaskets done correctly, I would have no reservations(at least not as far as the engine, dont know anything about the rest of the car). If not, it can be an expensive repair if you cant do it yourself. I dont know about the allante, but on the sts, dts, etc, you have to drop the whole engine cradle out the bottom and the head bolt holes need to be drilled and fitted with timesert inserts.
