I don't know what state you are in, and I know insurance laws vary from state to state, BUT, if the car is driveable, and you might find parts to fix it, in North Carolina if the insurance totals a vehicle, you can keep the vehicle, and they deduct salvage value from what they pay you for the vehicle. My daughter's boyfriend wrecked her car about three years ago, he rounded a curve and there were about four deer in the road, he swerved to miss them and took down a mailbox that was on a concrete post, and jumped a ditch. Insurance totaled it, she kept the car and they deducted the salvage value from what they paid her, a friend who runs a body shop patched it up and they are still driving it. Like I said, I don't know how things work in your state, but it may be something to check out, and good luck, sounds like you could use a little.
